Avoid anything too restrictive (other than a supportive bra) and keep in mind a few options in case of a C-section. What to Pack in Your Hospital Bagįirst pack your hospital bag for yourself. Here’s an extensive list of everything you may want or need with you in the hospital. We asked Babylist parents what their must-have items were and also drew on our own childbirth experiences. Some items are essential (you’ll need a car seat, for example) others will make you feel comfy and remind you of home. It’s fine to throw some items in at the last minute, like your toothbrush, but you’ll want your bag mostly packed and easily accessible by this point in your pregnancy. You should have your hospital bag ready to go by 36 weeks or 37 weeks pregnant, just in case you go into labor before your due date. Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas. Take whatever sticks to the toothpick and dip it in the tank.Your due date is approaching, and it’s time to pack your hospital bag. To feed your fish, dip a toothpick in the water about a quarter of an inch, then dip the wet end into the fish food. Use crushed-up goldfish food (flake form). They can go a day or two without food, if necessary. You only need to feed your fish a tiny amount each day. The snails can do the same job in your mini tank, and they need no additional maintenance! Pet shops keep snails in the plant tanks to help control algae. Usually they won't even charge you for them. When choosing your plants, ask the shop clerk to throw in a few tiny snails. The plants will also use up the nutrients from your fish's poop (ah, the circle of life). You need live plants to provide oxygen to your mini aquarium's ecosystem. You'll only need a pinch of something for this small tank, but luckily these are pretty cheap at the pet store. You can also try guppies, neon tetras, or Zebra Danios. Minnows are a hardy choice and cost only a few cents. Choose something that won't grow to more than an inch and a half long. These have lived in their little homes very happily for many years. _You can put up to four or five fish in a tank, but most of my tanks have ended up with just one or two. ![]() This allows the chlorine to evaporate, making it healthier for your fish. If you're using tap water, fill a container and let it sit for a while. You can also add a few larger stones or other decorations for visual interest - and to give any shy fish a place to hide. They will break down your fishes' poop into useful nutrients. These provide a surface for beneficial bacteria to grow. Use a hammer and nail, or for plastic lids, heat a metal BBQ skewer over a flame and melt a hole right through. You'll need to poke an air hole or two in the lid. ![]() Remove the label (use Goo Gone if necessary) and wash and rinse well. _I use plastic because I have kids, and we're all clumsy. Just change half the water once a month or so, and give it a scrubbing when the algae gets unbearable. When I read through all the details of how these mini aquaria are made, I realized it wouldn't be hard to put together my own versions using recycled jars.īecause each one is its own little ecosystem, it doesn't need a filter or frequent cleaning.
